You Cannot Serve Two Masters

June 23rd, 2012 by Todd Muffley

Over the last two weeks I have cleaned up my Twitter account and now I will begin to actually use it. I am down to following only two people, and yes, the screen shot is 100% real. I am following Jesus Christ and Satan.

If you are a Bible reader, you know that in it there is a passage about following Christ or Satan…and that you cannot serve both. Now I am not getting Biblical on anyone, but I am using it as an analogy to small business owners everywhere. You cannot do two things well, pick one and focus on it.

No better lessons are remembered than the ones we experience on our own. Over the last year, I have tried to serve two “masters” (re: run two businesses) and failed at both. One, the Catapult Project, was a catastrophic financial failure and the other suffered from “red-headed step child syndrome” as it wasn’t loved much over the last year and struggled.

The point is, when you are running a small business, it is very difficult, nearly impossible, to run multiple companies well. A young business needs all your time and attention and will falter if you don’t give it the proverbial 110%. Take it from a guy who knows, pick one and thrive; pick two and the struggle bus will stop at your house and pick you up for work every morning.

The Catapult Project was closed in April and my focus has been shifted back to Fat Atom and it is rebounding nicely. As for Satan and Jesus Christ, you will have to follow me on Twitter to find out. @toddmuffley
